    I'm so ashamed!

Post by AARST on Tue May 24, 2011 7:16 pm

I killed a Dreamcast! I was hooking up consoles to see if the cables were OK and accidentally hooked up the US Dreamcast. It blew up and smoked badly leaving a terrible stench. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry! *sobs uncontrollably*

If you just toasted the power supply, then there's a good chance you could resurrect it for cheap.

That's true... Hey, if I manage to swap the power supply for a European one, perhaps a DC with a dead laser, I might be able to play US games more easily. My TV supports NTSC input and I've taken them apart before, the power supplies are very similar.

Mostly, I would like to apologise to the Racketboy member who sent it to me a year and a half ago. Though it was reportedly glitchy, I never confirmed if it was actually defective...

That's exactly what I did, and that works perfectly. From memory the only caveat is that there are two revisions of the dreamcast hardware, and the power supplies are not compatible, but then they physically won't fit so don't worry about doing it wrong.

If the EU power supply fits, then it'll just work, no problem.

I've actually never tried this before, but could I do the same for other consoles? Just switching out the adapter would be so much cheaper than buying a stepdown converter...

Yeah. the hardware in the system is the same. As long as there were no hardware revisions, the OUTPUT of the power supply has to be the same in all regions. It's the input power circuit that's different.

It's easy to find PS1s, or PS2s with dead lasers and XBoxes with dead HDDs or whatnot. Why did I never think of this before? Oh... Maybe because I didn't have a TV that accepted NTSC video input.
